I was always fascinated with words and their colorful meanings. The origins of my creative journey of writing poetry began when I was eight. Family and close friends encouraged me to write. My parents were gifted poets so I attribute my enthusiasm in writing to them. My mother Oleata especially loved to recite poetry that she had learned or written in her youth. Her melodic voice and use of pitch and prosody were fascinating and captivating. One of her favorite pastimes was to read the Bible aloud which kept us in awe with the unique way she would make the words come alive! Although she always wanted to write a book, it never materialized in her lifetime. Throughout the years she infused the passion of poetry into my soul. About five years ago after my mother passed away, I decided to revisit my poems, carefully stored in manila folders and resume writing. Gradually I was able to work through the grief and isolation of losing the primary source of my inspiration and my reason for evolving into who I am. Whispers of Hope was born out of my need to express the joys, pain, situations, and the apprehensions we face daily. Whispers of Hope is a literary vehicle which transformed me as I wrote it. It is my desire that this book will bring healing, joy, and peace to the readers and that you too, will discover inner strength and renewal as you reflect upon your life and how you influence others. It is a gift which took decades to write and I hope the readers will inhale the heartfelt messages and exhale while they rethink their lives! Iva Smith lives with her husband Greg and two daughters in Virginia.

Echoes of Mercy, Whispers of Love connects the work of Alfred North Whitehead, process writers, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Henri Nouwen, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and others, to present a defense or “apologetic” for faith, hope, and love in action. This kind of faith and hope leads to transformed lives and transformed communities. A theology of hope provides a framework for counseling troubled, despairing persons in the midst of acute suffering, loss, and tragedy. Doty identifies the need for a healthy religion that will inspire, transform, and enable personal and community healing. This is the work of peacemaking in families and in our world. This book will connect with an audience that includes all believers and all who live with doubts and questions. All seekers for peace, hope, and truth in our post-modern era will find this a stimulating and helpful dialogue with the hard questions. Doty poses searching questions for reader’s reflection. This book promises to provide inspiration, Hope, and a rare opportunity for spiritual formation in the midst of life struggles. “Hooray for Pauline Doty! Her courage encourages us to lower our lofty traditions—so they may speak with the hurt, pain, loss, grief of our everyday lives. She invites us by her example—trust our own experience, follow our own questions, create our own “process” of life in faith and action. By confiding in us, Doty lends confidence that God (by many names and revelations) goes with and before us, all ways and always. This is a book for all whose “process” of life and work wants healing to lead to hoping, the practical to the prophetic. What a call to confront in urgent grace the “outrageous”—within and around us!” – Rev. John Auer, Retired, Forty years’ United Methodist congregational urban ministry

Despite being only 33 years old, Zoleka Mandela has endured enough to fill several lifetimes. While she may be a member of South Africa’s own royal family, Zoleka has not led a sheltered life. She has traveled down paths which most would not dare; from the horror of losing two children within two years, to the shadowy journey through cocaine addiction and rehab, and being diagnosed with cancer. Though she was robbed of her children, stripped of her sobriety, and subject to a disease that necessitated a double mastectomy, Zoleka Mandela is not a victim. She is a survivor, and her story serves as testimony to the strength of the human spirit in fighting against life’s challenges. Zoleka is a living example of success in spite of overwhelming challenges. She is now clean and cancer-free; she had her last session of chemotherapy in April 2013, and has been sober for 36 months. Through her story, it is impossible not to have faith in the good things in life, and possible to believe that anything is achievable.
